  • Textielfestival 2015 Leiden en Uitgeslapen

    14 mei 2015 / 6 reacties

I don't know if there are quilters that can easily I don't know if there are quilters that can easily throw away usable pieces of fabric, but I really can't... I save every piece of scrap fabric, and I have a big plastic bag where I put everything that's too small for my fabric stash.
But after 14 years of quilting that bag almost explodes, and I actually never use any of it.
Time to do something about that! So I ordered some cheap cash register rolls online (2 1/4 and 3 inch wide) and today I started sewing pieces just at random on about 18 inches long pieces of paper.
I just grab a handful of fabrics from the bag, iron them and put them next to my sewing machine. And with 5 pieces of paper I can even chain sew, so I don't have to cut my thread every time.
It's one big trip down memory lane, seeing all those familiar and old fabrics again. And if a piece is too small, just add another small piece to it, no rules. I love this!

Yesterday I received my order from @nannocreative Yesterday I received my order from @nannocreative , which was featured in their most recent newsletter.
It's the "Joen Wolfrom Essential Color Card Deck" with 200 colorcards, designed by #joenwolfrom
You might know Joen from her color studies and quiltbooks, and this is another new item from her.
With these cards, you can play and create your own color combinations for a new quilt, knitting project, embroidery or painting, and each color has different hues, tints, tones, shades and values.
The colors are not based on fabric collections, but provide the formulas for CMYK, RGB and HEX. But you can absolutely use it for fabric selection and take the cards/colors with you to the fabric store (or to buy paint or yarn)
The cards are 2 sided: one has the full color on it and the other has the colorwheel explanation and combinations for that specific color.
I think this will be a very useful tool for selecting colors.

This is it, my #realmenstitchquilt is (nearly) don This is it, my #realmenstitchquilt is (nearly) done. I only need to handsew the hanging sleeve and make a label, but everything else is done.
The measurements are around 35 x 40 inches (89 x 101 cm) and it's machine made and quilted.
My inspiration for this quilt came from my show and tells: after my introduction, people often asked how to spell my online name Real Men Stitch, so I decided to make a quilt with the name on it 😊
It is a combination of different patterns and I am very thankful to @patchanddot , @henrikmundorf , @fullbobbindesigns and @quietplay for designing these sewing inspired patterns. And of course @alisonglass for designing (most of) the fabrics.
I am very pleased with how this one turned out.

Yesterday when we were still in Ghent, we received Yesterday when we were still in Ghent, we received an update from our neighbour/cat-sitter. She's taken care of our cats before, but hadn't seen either of them when she visited, because they were hiding for her. But last days she'd already seen 1 of the 2 about 3 times, so there's progress.
But she also warned us, that she'd found 2 empty packages of wet food in our living room. We just returned home and saw the evidence...
Imagine this wet food being on the counter top in the kitchen, in a cardboard box. So they managed to get 2 of the packages out of that box, take it to the living room and completely rip it to pieces! Look at all the bite marks!!! 😮 Someone (or both) must have gone completely mental on the packages...
What happened, and when did they turn into these little demolishing monsters!?
So now we know for next time that no food can be kept in sight anytime...sigh... 😂

After visiting the quiltshow, in the afternoon we After visiting the quiltshow, in the afternoon we went to the city center of Ghent. I had been here before, but I didn't have much time then and it was raining, so today Björn and I went to explore the city. And it really is beautiful! The weather was much better today, so a lot of people were out on the streets. A lovely historic city center with beautiful old buildings.
A great tip that I'd received a while ago from @handmadepastnl : visit the @bookznboozegent, a lovely shop where they sell... books and booze. Only books read and recommended by the owner, and all paired with a specialty booze. The owner alone already makes it worth visiting the shop, a great enthusiastic man 👍
I know for sure that I will return again in the future. We're staying for one more night before we drive home again.

I was a guest at their meeting with my show and tell about a year ago, and since then this guild has a special place in my heart.
So it was really nice to see so many familiar faces again today, and to see the beautiful work the members make.
The exhibition is held in 3 rooms of this gorgeous building, and there's also a place to have a rest with some coffee and cake.
I'm really glad I/we decided to go, we had a lovely day today ❤️ Thanks everyone that we have met and spoken to today!

I managed to finish part 1 of the #whimsywonderlan I managed to finish part 1 of the #whimsywonderlandqal , designed by @tomte.studio
This magical Quilt-A-Long has an Alice in Wonderland theme, and this first part is Alice's apron.
I'm making it using all solids, with a background with tiny coloured dots on it.
Sewing all the components together, while all the points matching up was a bit of a challenge (some unpicking has occurred...), but I'm happy with how it looks. In the end the minor issues won't be noticed.
The block is quite big, 18x21 inches (46x53 cm)
Looking forward to start sewing the next block!

So sorry to read about the sudden passing away of So sorry to read about the sudden passing away of the famous Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf (64) 😢
I have always loved his work, being it the provocative nudes from early in his carreer, to the stylish photo series that he made later.
Always very open in interviews and his work about his homosexuality, which I applaud.
He will be missed...

I started with the #whimsywonderlandqal by @tomte.studio, and the first part is Alice's dress. This is the top section done. It's not perfect, but for now it is what it is, I'll see how it goes with the rest.

I had 2 FULL days this weekend, but all very fun a I had 2 FULL days this weekend, but all very fun and both days quilting related.
On Saturday I was invited by Hannie from @marinpatchwork for a show and tell. MarinPatchwork is celebrating it's 30th anniversary, and Hannie organised an exhibition with quilts from students, and I was there 1 day to do 2 show and tells. Lovely day, warm welcome, nice people and beautiful quilts. Unfortunately I didn't have a lot of time left, so I did not take any photos of the quilts on display.
And today (Sunday) I was invited by the @hendrickhamelmuseum and quilting group De Lingelappers, both in Gorinchem. De Lingelappers also celebrate their 30th anniversary and because of that they have a show at the Hendrick Hamel museum. And what's good about that, is that the exhibition will last for 6 months. And because they wanted the show to be opened by "someone famous" within the quilting world , I was asked to give a speech and open the exhibition.
So I made a bit of a backdrop for our "stage" with one of my quilts and a piece of chintz fabric (there is a link between chintz fabrics and the museum 😉)
The speech went very well, and the people who attended were all very nice and interested.
The curator of the museum asked me, because I was their guest and did the speech, if I would be willing to lend one of my quilts as well for the exhibition. He had seen my Adam and Steve quilt recently, and wanted to showcase that one. How cool is that!?
So among the (around) 30 quilts on display during this show, my Adam and Steve is in the museum for 6 months too. I am so happy!
So it was a busy weekend, but all worth it ❤️
A little sneak peek at the backside of my #realmen A little sneak peek at the backside of my #realmenstitchquilt
I barely had enough fabric that I used for the front left over to make a backing, so I took 1 of my fat quarters from @alisonglass and made a strip out of that and sewed it halfway inbetween to make it fit.
The machine quilting is done, as you can see the 60 degree diamond shape, I'm pleased with the result.
Now I'm waiting for my binding fabric to arrive, although I have very little time the next couple of days. So perhaps binding will need to wait until after the weekend. We'll see...

It took me a long time and patience to find enough It took me a long time and patience to find enough yardage of this background fabric for my #whimsywonderlandqal by @tomte.studio , but I finally managed. I chose this fabric, because it has tiny coloured dots on it, some of them match with my solids. And I love the irregular placement of the dots, so when you cut it up for #fpp foundation paper piecing, you won't notice if the dots go in another direction.
The fabic is designed by @kimberbelldesigns and is called Vintage Flora, produced by @maywoodstudio
So soon I can finally start making the first part of this QAL, Alice's dress.

He's born in 1907 in New Jersey, but moved to Paris when he was 18. He wanted to be a writer, but turned into a photographer. He was well known in the 20's and 30's for his fashion and opera photography.
Little was known about his other works of art, his male nudes.
George himself considered his male nude photographs his best works ever.
In that time period (the 40's and 50's) male nudity and homosexuality was prohibited, so this work has never been published or shown at exhibitions.
Later well known photographers like Robert Mapplethorpe were praised for their male nudes, but Georges work was made in the wrong era and was long forgotten and out of sight.
Luckily the Kinsey Institute has a very large collection of his work, and there is a renewed interest in his work nowadays. Especially because George was way ahead of his time with his work.
It was a very interesting documentary, I really loved it. Makes me want to do some more research into his works of art. So of all 3 movies that I've seen this one scored the most on my list.
Thanks @queerfilmfestivalutrecht , I'm already looking forward to next year!

Tonight I watched my second movie this week during Tonight I watched my second movie this week during the @queerfilmfestivalutrecht
The movie was shown at our local cinema @louishartlooper and had the title "All the colours of the world are between black and white"
It's a movie made by the Nigerian director Babatunde Apalowo. The story is set in Lagos (Nigeria) where the 2 men Bawa and Bambino (a courier and a photographer) meet.
Their feelings for each other grow, but it's impossible for them both to develop this into something more. Being gay is forbidden in Nigeria and queer people who are discovered are at risk of being beaten up or even lynched in the streets.
A very touching story, you could see their feelings grow, but also their dispair and fear for being caught.
Making this movie was very risky for the director, and also finding actors to play the parts was hard, all due to fear of getting into trouble.
I'm glad I've seen this movie, I would absolutely recommend watching it.
Tomorrow evening we're both going to watch our final QFFU movie for this year.

"Captain Faggotron saves the Universe" was shown at Villa Concordia in Utrecht. It's a movie that was released this year. The movie was...how shall I say it...weird and camp 😂 Absolutely not everyone's cup of tea, I'm sure of that, but it was amusing. Not sure if it will turn into an all time cult classic, but time will tell...
Next visit to the theatre is Wednesday evening, I think it will be a completely different kind of movie 😊
